Surgery Setback

Not good news on Ray this morning. They put him under anesthesia and were just about to operate when his heart rate became dangerously elevated. The doctor brought him back up and his heart rate is stabilizing, but surgery is postponed for the foreseeable future. We are scheduled to visit with a cardiologist tomorrow to determine if there are other issues. Please continue to keep us in your thoughts.

  1. That is scary! I’m sorry to hear about this; I hope there is a solution so Ray can have his surgery. Keeping you and your boy in my thoughts and prayers.

  2. I just logged on now to see if there was any update for Ray. I’m sorry to hear they were not able to do the surgery. Was he sedated for the biopsy? Maybe surgery was scheduled too soon and he needed to still recover from that. I do understand how you were in one frame of mind and now something else steps out in front. He’s in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. Thanks for your support, Maximutt and Kathy.

Ray was sedated with Isoflurane for his biopsies, which occurred on July 20, and he did just fine. All preliminary bloodwork for today’s procedure was normal apart from an elevated WBC count, which they attributed to swelling at the tumor site, but now we’re not so sure. His temperature has been elevated too, but he is taking Simplicef and it had come down quite a bit since Monday, when it was 106°. This morning it was 102.9° – still high but acceptable. Hopefully we’ll know more after visiting with the cardiologist tomorrow, although I’m pretty scared at the moment. The surgeon said he’s done hundreds of these amputations and never had this happen. I don’t feel very good about that.

  4. Been thinking of Roy today. So sorry to hear about the complications that postponed his surgery. The only thing I can say is that with a dog with cancer, expected the unexpected sometimes (both good and bad). Lupe was famous for having complications and then as we decided a treatment option, she would bounce back. Please keep us posted on the cardiologist appointment. Its okay to be scared, actually its completely normal. Love your boy, try to relax and remember to breathe.

  5. I am so sorry to hear that Roy couldn’t go through with the surgery. Thinking of you guys and hoping that the cardiologist can give you a plan.
